What is a Photo Print Size Calculator?

What DPI should I use for photo prints?

300 DPI (dots per inch) is the standard for high-quality photo prints viewed up close, such as albums, portraits, and small framed pieces. Large prints seen from a distance — posters, canvases, banners — look perfectly sharp at 150–240 DPI, because your eye can't resolve individual dots from further away.

How do I know the biggest print my photo can make?

Divide each pixel dimension by your target DPI. A 6000 × 4000 pixel image at 300 DPI prints a crisp 20 × 13.3 inches; drop to 200 DPI and the same file comfortably covers 30 × 20 inches. This tool does that maths both ways so you can match a file to a frame instantly.

How many megapixels do I need for a given print?

Multiply the pixel dimensions you need and divide by one million. An 8 × 10 inch print at 300 DPI needs 2400 × 3000 pixels, which is 7.2 megapixels — well within any modern camera or recent phone. Bigger prints or higher DPI raise the requirement proportionally.

What's the difference between DPI and PPI?

PPI (pixels per inch) describes an image's on-screen pixel density, while DPI (dots per inch) describes a printer's output density. In everyday photo printing the two are used interchangeably, and this calculator treats your entered DPI as the pixels-per-inch mapping between the digital file and the physical print.
