Early Days in Photography and Media
Mat Gallagher’s career in photography and media has been a long and winding road, filled with numerous twists and turns that have ultimately led him to become the Editor-in-Chief for T3.com. His journey began in the golden age of digital photography, where he cut his teeth writing for several prominent photography magazines. These titles included Digital Photo, Digital SLR Photography, What Digital Camera, and Amateur Photographer. It was a time of great innovation, with the first sub-£1000 DSLR, the first 1MP camera phone, and the introduction of the iPhone. During this period, Mat also headed up the product testing for the modified car magazine, Max Power. His passion for vintage Mercedes and Caterhams led to a mild obsession that would stay with him for years to come. In addition to his writing and testing duties, Mat was also instrumental in the creation of video content and digital presence for What Digital Camera. He led numerous projects in digital magazines and part-works photography series, cementing his reputation as a multi-talented media professional.
A New Chapter in Asia
In 2012, Mat made the bold decision to move to Asia, where he took on roles at Time Out Beijing and later Time Out Hong Kong as Managing Editor. His responsibilities included managing contracting publishing titles, including magazines for the Hong Kong Design Institute, MGM Macau, and Studio City Macau. Mat also oversaw a series of ex-pat and lifestyle titles, including Angloinfo and Localiz. During his time in Asia, Mat developed a deep appreciation for the diverse cultures and ways of life that exist in this vibrant region. He honed his skills as a editor and publisher, learning to navigate the complex challenges of working in a fast-paced and often unpredictable media environment. His experience in Asia provided him with a unique perspective and set of skills that would serve him well in his future endeavors.
A New Chapter in the US
In 2019, Mat made the move to Chicago, where he joined the T3 team in 2021 as Editor-in-Chief. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the US content, including news, reviews, and features on the latest and greatest technology products. Mat’s passion for technology and his ability to communicate complex ideas in an engaging and accessible way make him an ideal candidate for this position. When he’s not busy planning content, commissioning products for review, or reviewing the latest gadgets, Mat enjoys photography, travel, and playing guitar. He remains a car enthusiast and is torn between wanting a big pickup truck and a Mustang. His love of music and photography is a testament to his creative and curious nature, and it’s no surprise that he’s found a home at T3.com.
